An old general's legacy
Hailing from Eastern shores
An iconoclast samurai seeks her martial perfection

Surrogate Daughter

Smoking a pipe in the winds of the aftermath of the Garlean subjugation of Doma, a lone roegadyn sits at the edge of a vast jungle and the border of his homeland. Ryujin Okoto, in a sorry state befitting a general of Doma. He mulls his disparate thoughts in the smoke he exhales. Wondering if he shall give himself to the Golmoran maw; if the kami would be appeased at his gruesome death.

Before he can ruminate any further, he hears a shrill cry that pierces the nights quiet. He instinctually leaps to his feet at the ready, trained reflexes have his hands ready to draw fast enough to split the rain. A deafening silence only meets his challenge when suddenly the roegadyn glances a figure bursting from the threshold of the forest.

And collapses.

Leaping from his knoll, the roegadyn sprints down to the shadowed figure. Still ready to slice the void itself. And then another cry, but now much smaller and helpless. His steps grew further apart as he pushed himself faster, with renewed vigor.

There, in the cold, moonless night, lay a viera and a small bundle she clenched tightly with the last of her strength. The mother looked up, a plea in her eyes at the large figure towering over her. The roegadyn had seen many vignettes such as this, but it still gripped his heart with icy talons. She mouthed pleas but only crimson emerged. One final effort she raised the bundle to Okoto, who took it into his arms.

General's Training

The roegadyn who had rescued the viera infant, had failed in his many attempts to give her back to one of the Rava tribes. Diplomacy was never his strongsuit. None would accept her for reasons they kept to themselves, which befuddled and angered the giant samurai. So he did as duty commanded and cared for her. Bestowing a bastardized Dalmascan name, of what little he knew of the nation. If the Rava would not accept her, then maybe Dalmasca would accept Freyja.

The pair stayed in hiding on the edges of Nagxia and the Azim Steppe. Leading life one day at a time, he hunted during the day, striking shelters out of the harsh wilderness, and then moving along in the cover of night.

The seasons passed, and the realization that he would not be able to always protect the small viera girl started to weigh. If the wilderness did not one day claim her, then his pursuers would. He knew she would take well to the training of a martial ways, but tradition forbade him from training someone of lower status, much less one so foreign to his homeland.

Of what few of her people he had met, he mused if she was even a viera at all! Hotheaded instead of detached, direct and assertive instead of aloof, deliberate instead of delicate. The makings of a warrior and noble of Doma, a samurai.

He was harsh in his training, running drills in the fresh hours of the morning, survival skills, hunting, tracking, iaijutsu and karate. Okoto found a pupil that was insatiable and tireless in her tasks. Quickly absorbing everything his long warrior's life had to teach.

Call to Adventure

Twenty summers had passed since the kami had bestowed Okoto with a daughter. When he looked at her, he could only think of how fate could be so cruel to those undeserving. But even as he watched his homeland be subjugated and his people oppressed without recourse. He laid the last seeds of hope he had in Freyja.

Okoto had kept her from the world long enough and he sent her to Hingan territory, to train with the Sekiseigumi. A faction of outcasts, where they'd take into service a viera ijin. She had no social graces and a disguised general Okoto had to plea her case to the head of the dojo. A simple display of prowess was enough to convince them to take her.

But as Freyja went through her demonstration, someone was finding her stances and strikes all too familiar. And as her name grew in Kugane over the following months, so did the gaze of a particular Garlean officer narrow in.

Returning back from an evening patrol to the slums where she cared for the aging and sickly roegadyn father, she was met with the door shattered into splinters. The aftermath of a battle decorated their humble room. Okoto kneeling stubbornly in the center, surrounded by his attackers corpses.

"You must leave, they will pursue you without end," he struggled to finish as he looked up at his daughter's sobbing face. He collapsed onto his back; finally the general would be allowed rest. She protested and wailed, clutching his massive hand in hers. He could only smile and feel proud of what a fine student she was, of a blessed daughter she was to him. She had all that she needed from him and it was time. His eyes slowly shut, "Remember your training and be free my young kit."

Hooks

I am generally open to any kind of approach! I will try and do my best to make a fun and engaging story. So don't feel obligated to be confined to these, let's get creative!

Key:

★: Low commitment.Your character can spot something about Freyja without too many assumptions, e.g. Freyja is often dressed in armor from the Far East and can be approached with a comment on her looks/mannerisms.

★★: Medium commitment. Freyja can be hired as a sellsword or can be approached for other employment. She looks the part of a fierce warrior and will also accept duels and offers of training.

★★★: Long-term arc and high commitment. This is getting into the weeds with her backstory. If you would like to setup something long-term and intertwine stories, these are my ideas for it! I've added a special echo elements to some hooks if your character has that.

★| 意気衝天 Ikishoten | Unusually muscular and defined, even for a viera, Freyja is determined to follow in her father's martial legacy. Training is a way of life and she will always accept a good-natured spar or challenge. Her meditation is equally intense, sometimes involving misogi (ritual waterfall meditation) and is thus always in search of a good waterfall.
Echo: "Again." A loud, cantankerous voice booms through the bamboo copse. A wooden THOK. "Again!" Another slap of wood, the young viera kit is shaking from fatigue. She is ten summers and full of spirit, but the intense afternoon has almost broken it into a puddle of sweat, mud, and tears. Her eyes water as she musters the strength for another strike against the tree. It hits with a pitifully soft thud. The roegadyn samurai shakes his head impatiently and wrests the training bokken.from her. One precise motion and it was as if a hurricane rend it's fury to the isolated copse.

★| 焼き肉 Yakiniku | However, training can take it's toll. Freyja possesses a ravenous appetite for all things barbecued. Although she tries to conceal it; her vast protein intake is offset slightly by a guilty pleasure of her childhood favorite: dango. Almost all offers of food may shake her resolve.

★★| 葉隠聞書 Hagakure Kikigaki | Freyja has much to learn about Eorzea. She is a fish out of water amongst it's culture and people. Her thick accent is unmistakably Doman, and her mannerisms are disciplined, but fiery. She knows little of her kin and is iconoclastic as a viera. Deep red hair, thick and taut frame, and speech that is cordial but booming and often mispronouncing common Eorzean terms. While not her main priority, she still holds curiosity for Dalmasca and her true heritage. She may be rumored to be inquiring about the tribes of the Golmore Jungle.

★★| 暁天 Gyoten | Freyja is not just an outlier in Eorzean culture and social norms, but in civilization by and large. She is a starving (martial) artist, who is easily enticed with shining gil and employment. Muscles will not feed themselves.
Echo: "Answer me you filthy ijin!" the hyur noble screamed and gritted his teeth. The other patrons of the udon shack customarily kept their heads low and averted their eyes away from the young noble ranting. Freyja kept her gaze fixed forward as insults were screamed into her sensitive lopine ears. Her lips curled; blood boiled as she suffered the indignity. She could endure. "You think you are a samurai just because you wave that tachi around, Sekiseigumi whore?! I will show you how the true bushi class fights!" A click from a scabbard, interrupted by a thud. The hilt of Freyja's blade punched into the arrogant lordling's stomach and he crumpled like paper.

★★★| 照破 Shoha | Freyja has vowed to discover her father's killers and bring them to justice. She lives the life of a 'giang hồ' (outlaw warrior) but lacking the cruelty in her heart to turn to banditry. She instead takes opportunities to intervene and help the smallfolk.

Thank You For Reading!

Hi there, thank you for your interest! I am new to roleplaying and Freyja is my first character! I've been playing FFXIV since HW, and FF since I was small starting with FF7. I have been mostly a raider, but recently have slowed down to more casual and creative elements such as RP!

Freyja is inspired by my love of martial arts and my samurai/monk history in FF. (I always gravitate towards those jobs in the other games.) And also FFXII and Ivalice are my favorite FF settings. I am still developing her and working on elements of her personality. As of now, I am open to all forms of RP as long as it fits the story.

If you're interested, you can find me on Maduin, Freyja Sieghardt. Or shoot me a message on discord @ Siegherz#0269.

Thank you for reading and happy roleplaying!
